The story

A Story from Ancient Rome: Mark Antony

Hello! My name is Mark Antony, and I lived a long, long time ago in a powerful place called the Roman Republic. I was born in the city of Rome in the year 83 BCE. When I was growing up, I loved adventure! I became a soldier and then a general, leading brave Roman soldiers. One of my best friends was a very famous leader you may have heard of—Julius Caesar. He was a great general, and I was proud to be his friend and one of his most trusted commanders.

Working with Julius Caesar was exciting. Around the year 54 BCE, I helped him lead his army in a faraway land called Gaul. We were a great team! I learned so much about how to be a strong and fair leader. I was known for being a powerful speaker, and I could inspire my soldiers to be brave in any situation. The people of Rome respected me, and I became an important politician, helping to make decisions for our city.

A very sad thing happened in the year 44 BCE—my friend Julius Caesar was killed. All of Rome was in chaos. To help bring peace, I joined together with Caesar's adopted son, Octavian, and another general named Lepidus. In 43 BCE, we formed a team of three leaders called the Second Triumvirate. Our job was to rule Rome together and make sure it stayed strong. It was a very important job, and for a while, we worked together to lead the Roman world.

My duties as a leader took me to the amazing land of Egypt. There, I met the brilliant queen, Cleopatra. She was smart, powerful, and the ruler of her own kingdom. We became great friends and allies. We decided to combine our power to rule the eastern part of the Roman lands together. It was a time of great partnership, but not everyone in Rome was happy about it, especially my old partner, Octavian.

Eventually, my disagreements with Octavian led to a huge battle at sea in 31 BCE, called the Battle of Actium. It was the end of my time as a Roman leader. I lived to be 53 years old. Though my story has a sad ending, I am remembered as one of Rome's most famous generals and leaders. I lived during a time of great change, when the Roman Republic was turning into the Roman Empire, and I played a very big part in that incredible story.
