The story

Michael Ende: A Journey into Imagination

Hello! My name is Michael Ende, and I’m a storyteller. I was born in a lovely town in Germany called Garmisch-Partenkirchen on November 12th, 1929. My father, Edgar, was a painter who filled our home with pictures of magical, dream-like worlds. I loved looking at his art. Growing up surrounded by his paintings made my own imagination feel like a wonderful playground. It was full of fantastic creatures and amazing adventures just waiting to be discovered. I knew from a young age that stories were something very special.

When I grew up, I first thought I wanted to be an actor and stand on a big stage. I tried it for a while, but I soon realized that my favorite part was not just acting out a story, but creating the stories themselves. One day, a wonderful idea for a story about a boy named Jim Button and his best friend, Luke the Engine Driver, chugged right into my head. In 1960, that idea became my very first book! I was so happy that children could read about their exciting journey on a little island. It was then that I knew for sure that writing was my true adventure.

I loved creating new worlds for my readers to explore. In 1973, I wrote a book called 'Momo,' which is about a special girl who knew how to really listen to her friends. In the story, she had a very important job: she had to save everyone from the sneaky Men in Grey who were stealing all their time! Then, in 1979, I wrote my most famous book, 'The Neverending Story.' It’s about a boy named Bastian who finds a magical book. As he reads it, he becomes part of the story himself and must help save the land of Fantastica from being destroyed. I wanted to show that when you read, you aren't just looking at words on a page. Your own imagination helps build the world and makes you a part of the adventure, too.

I spent my life sharing the stories that filled my imagination. I lived to be 65 years old, and my own story came to a peaceful end in 1995. But the worlds I created, like Fantastica, live on. Today, children and grown-ups all over the globe still travel with Jim Button or help Bastian on his quest. I hope my stories always remind you that the most amazing adventures can be found right inside your own mind.
