Noguchi Hideyo: The Doctor Who Never Gave Up

Hello! My name is Noguchi Hideyo. I was born in a small village in Japan on November 9th, 1876. When I was just a baby in 1877, I had an accident and fell near our home's fire pit. My left hand was badly burned, and my fingers healed in a way that made them stick together. It was very hard to use my hand, but I never let it stop me. When I was a teenager in 1892, my wonderful teacher and my friends collected money so I could have an operation to fix it! This incredible kindness inspired me, and I decided right then that I would become a doctor to help other people.

I studied harder than ever before to become a doctor. In 1900, I sailed all the way across the ocean to America to learn even more about medicine. A few years later, in 1904, I got a very important job at a famous science laboratory in New York City called the Rockefeller Institute. My job was like being a detective for diseases! I used a powerful microscope to look for tiny, invisible germs called bacteria that make people sick. In 1911, I made a big discovery. I found the sneaky germ that caused a very serious illness. Finding it meant that other doctors could finally figure out how to help people who had it.

I wanted to help people all over the world. So, starting in 1918, I began to travel to faraway places in South America and Africa. I was on a mission to stop a dangerous disease called yellow fever. I spent many long days and nights in my lab, searching for the germ that caused it. I believed that if I could find it, we could make a medicine to protect everyone. It was hard work, but I knew that helping families stay safe and healthy was the most important thing I could do.

While I was working in Africa in 1928, I became sick with the same disease I was trying to stop. I lived to be 51 years old, and my life was full of discovery. Today, people in my home country of Japan remember my hard work, and my picture is even printed on their 1,000-yen money bill! I hope my story teaches you that it doesn’t matter where you start in life or what challenges you face. If you work hard and have a dream to help others, you can make a big difference in the world.
