The story

Osamu Tezuka: The God of Manga

Hello! My name is Osamu Tezuka, and you may know me by my nickname, the ‘God of Manga.’ My story begins in Toyonaka, Japan, where I was born on November 3rd, 1928. From a young age, I was fascinated by two things: the intricate world of insects, which I loved to collect, and the boundless world of drawing. My notebooks were my personal galleries, filled with comics I created myself. I found great inspiration in the American cartoons and films I watched, especially the magical work of Walt Disney. My mother was my greatest supporter, always encouraging me to follow my passion for drawing. I grew up during the difficult years of World War II, and art became my sanctuary. It was a way for me to escape the harsh realities of the world and create places filled with happiness and hope, all on the pages of my notebooks.

Even with my deep love for art, I also wanted to honor my family's wishes, so I pursued a very different path alongside my drawing. I studied medicine and, in 1961, I earned my medical license, officially becoming a doctor. However, the call to be an artist was too strong to ignore. While I was still a student, I began to publish my comics professionally, pouring my creative energy into them. My first major success arrived in 1947 with a manga titled 'New Treasure Island.' The book was an incredible hit and sold thousands of copies. In it, I tried something that was new for manga at the time. I used techniques that made the story feel like a movie, using close-up panels, wide shots, and different angles to show action. This cinematic style made the stories more dynamic and exciting, and it would go on to change manga forever.

In the years after the war, Japan was a country focused on rebuilding and looking toward the future. I felt a strong desire to create stories that would give people, especially children, a sense of hope. In 1952, I brought a character to life who would become famous not just in Japan, but all around the world: Tetsuwan Atomu, whom you probably know as Astro Boy. He was a powerful robot boy with a kind and gentle human heart. For me, he was a symbol that science and humanity could work together to build a peaceful and better world. My creative journey didn't stop there. I went on to create many other beloved characters, including the brave white lion in 'Jungle Emperor,' which became known as 'Kimba the White Lion.' I also created 'Black Jack,' a brilliant surgeon who performed incredible medical feats to help people, a character that allowed me to use my medical knowledge in my storytelling.

My dreams for my characters extended beyond the printed page. I imagined them moving, speaking, and coming to life. To make this dream a reality, I founded my own animation studio, Mushi Production, in 1961. It was at this studio that my team and I achieved something truly revolutionary for television. On January 1st, 1963, we aired the very first weekly animated series on Japanese television, 'Astro Boy.' The show was an immediate and massive success. It captured the hearts of audiences in Japan and was soon shown in other countries, helping to introduce the world to Japanese animation, which you now know as 'anime.' Just a few years later, in 1965, we reached another milestone by creating 'Kimba the White Lion,' Japan's first full-color animated TV series, which brought my vibrant jungle world to life in brilliant color.

I spent my entire life telling stories, drawing and writing until my final days. In all, I created over 700 manga series, which added up to more than 150,000 pages of art. I lived to be 60 years old. Today, I am remembered for helping to shape the modern worlds of manga and anime that are loved by so many. My work continues to be read and watched by people everywhere, and I hope that my stories about peace, the value of life, and hope for the future continue to inspire new generations of artists and dreamers to create worlds of their own.
