Just want Oswaldo Cruz?
Hello. My name is Oswaldo Cruz. When I was a little boy living in Brazil, I loved science. I had a special tool called a microscope that let me see teeny-tiny things that no one else could see. Looking at those tiny things was so much fun. I knew right away that I wanted to be a doctor so I could help people stay healthy and strong.
When I grew up, I became a doctor, just like I dreamed. In the year 1903, I was given a very big job in a city called Rio de Janeiro. Lots of people were getting sick from pesky mosquitoes and other little critters. My helpers and I were called the 'mosquito brigades.' We went all over the city to help. We cleaned up puddles and messy spots where the bugs liked to live. We wanted to make sure everyone had a clean and safe home.
Our hard work paid off. Soon, fewer people were getting sick, and the city became a much healthier place to live and play. Helping people was the best job in the world. I lived to be 44 years old, and I am remembered for helping make my country of Brazil a safer and healthier home for everyone. The science center I started is still helping people today.
