Just want Pedro Álvares Cabral?
Hello! My name is Pedro Álvares Cabral. I was born around the year 1467 in a town called Belmonte, in the beautiful country of Portugal. My family was noble, which meant I had the chance to go to the royal court and learn alongside the future king. It was an exciting time to be alive! Brave sailors were setting off in big ships to explore parts of the world that Europeans had never seen before. I heard amazing stories, especially after an explorer named Vasco da Gama made it all the way to India by sea in 1499. His journey filled everyone, including me, with a sense of wonder and adventure.
In the year 1500, the king of Portugal, Manuel I, gave me a very important job. He made me the commander of a huge fleet of thirteen ships! My mission was to sail to India, following the new sea route that Vasco da Gama had discovered. The king wanted me to set up a trading post there so we could bring back valuable spices like pepper and cinnamon. He also wanted me to build friendly relationships with the leaders in India. It was a huge responsibility. We spent months preparing the ships, filling them with food, water, and goods for trading. On March 9th, 1500, with hundreds of sailors and soldiers, my fleet raised its anchors and we sailed out into the vast Atlantic Ocean.
Sailing to India was tricky. To catch the best winds and avoid getting stuck near the coast of Africa, I steered my ships far out to the west. We sailed and sailed for weeks. Then, on April 22nd, 1500, a sailor shouted, 'Land ho!' We had found land that wasn't on any of our maps! It was a complete surprise. We saw lush green forests, amazing parrots with colorful feathers, and we met the local people, who were very curious about us. I named this new place 'Ilha de Vera Cruz,' which means 'Island of the True Cross.' I knew it was an important discovery, so I claimed the land for my king and for Portugal. Today, you know this incredible land as the country of Brazil.

We stayed in Brazil for about ten days, but we still had a mission to complete. We had to get to India. We set sail again, but our journey became very dangerous. A gigantic storm appeared out of nowhere and four of our ships were lost to the sea. It was a very sad time for all of us. Despite the loss, we pushed on and finally reached Calicut, India, in September of 1500. Trading there was not as easy as we had hoped. There were disagreements and even a big fight. We did manage to load our remaining ships with precious spices before starting the long and difficult voyage home. When I arrived back in Portugal in June of 1501, I had only four of the thirteen ships I had started with.
After my long voyage, I settled down and lived a quieter life in Portugal. Even though my trip to India had many challenges, my accidental discovery of Brazil changed history. Because of my voyage, Portugal began to explore and settle this vast new land. I lived until about the year 1520, to be about 53 years old. Today, I am remembered as the European explorer who first reached Brazil. It is why the people of Brazil, a huge and vibrant country, speak Portuguese. My unexpected journey helped to connect different parts of the world and redrew the maps for everyone who came after me.
