The story

Philip II of Macedon

Hello. My name is Philip II, and I was the king of a kingdom called Macedon. My home was part of a land you might have heard of called ancient Greece. When I was a boy, Macedon was not a very strong place. Other, bigger kingdoms often bothered us, and our people did not feel safe. I had a big dream for my home. I wanted to make Macedon so strong and powerful that no one would dare to bother us again. I dreamed of making it a place that everyone would respect and look up to. My goal was to build a safe and proud home for all of my people.

I became the king of Macedon in the year 359 BCE. Right away, I saw that my kingdom was in a lot of trouble. We had enemies on all sides who thought we were weak. My very first job was to bring all of my people together and make them feel like one strong team. I knew that to protect our home, we needed a new kind of army. I had big ideas to create an army that would be the best in the entire world. I planned to give them new tools and teach them new ways to fight so that our soldiers would be stronger than anyone had ever seen before.

To make my army the best, I came up with some clever new ideas. First, I gave my soldiers special spears that were extra, extra long. They were called sarissas. These spears were so long that my soldiers could reach our enemies long before their enemies could reach us. It was a huge advantage. I also taught my soldiers how to fight together in a tight group. They would stand in a special square shape called a phalanx, with all their long spears pointing out. When they moved together, they looked like a giant, spiky hedgehog. This formation was very hard for other armies to break through and made my soldiers almost unbeatable.

My army was strong, but my dream was even bigger. I wanted to unite all the different city-states of Greece so we could all be stronger together. In the year 338 BCE, we fought a very important battle called the Battle of Chaeronea. My amazing army was victorious, and after that victory, I was able to bring most of Greece together under my leadership. I also had a family. My son was named Alexander, and I knew he was very clever. I wanted him to have the best education, so I hired the most famous teacher of that time, a man named Aristotle, to be his tutor.

My life ended unexpectedly in the year 336 BCE. I lived to be 46 years old. Even though my time as king was over, I left behind a strong and united kingdom that was ready for its next great adventure. The work I did prepared my son for his future. My son, Alexander, took everything I built and all the lessons he learned and went on to become one of the most famous leaders in history. People now call him Alexander the Great, and it all started with the dream I had to make my home of Macedon strong and safe.
