Just want Pompey the Great?
Hello! My name is Gnaeus Pompeius, but many people just call me Pompey. I became so famous that people even added 'the Great' to my name! I was born on September 29th, in the year 106 BCE, in a part of the Roman Republic called Picenum. My father was a general in the army, and when I was a boy, I knew I wanted to be a great soldier and leader for Rome, just like him. I worked very hard and became a general when I was still a young man. A powerful Roman leader named Sulla saw how well I led my soldiers and was so impressed with my victories that he gave me a special nickname. He called me 'Magnus,' which means 'the Great.' I was very proud!
As I grew older, I led Rome’s armies in many important battles. One of my biggest and most important jobs came in the year 67 BCE. The huge Mediterranean Sea, which was like a giant highway for our ships, was filled with pirates! These pirates would steal from our trading boats, which carried food and other important things, and everyone was very scared. The people of Rome asked me to solve this dangerous problem. I came up with a very clever plan. I divided the whole sea into different sections and sent my ships to clear out the pirates one section at a time. My plan worked perfectly! In just a few months, the seas were safe again. Everyone in Rome cheered for me. I felt so happy that I could help my people.
Rome was a very big place, and leading it was a hard job for just one person. So, in the year 60 BCE, I decided to team up with two other powerful men. Their names were Julius Caesar and Marcus Crassus. Together, the three of us formed a special team called the First Triumvirate. At first, we worked together very well, and we were all friends. But soon, Julius Caesar and I started to disagree. We both had different ideas about what was best for Rome, and we both wanted to be the most important leader. Our friendship turned into a rivalry. Sadly, our disagreements led to a big fight between our armies. This fight was called a civil war, and it began in the year 49 BCE.

The war against Caesar was very difficult. After losing a very important battle, my life came to an end in a faraway land called Egypt in the year 48 BCE. I lived to be almost 58 years old. Even though my story has a sad ending, people still remember me as Pompey the Great. I was a general who won many battles for Rome, a protector who cleared the seas of pirates, and a leader who helped the Roman Republic grow. My story, and my rivalry with Julius Caesar, became a famous part of the history of ancient Rome, and it is still told to people today.
