The story

A Royal Life of Service: The Story of Prince Philip

Hello there. My name is Prince Philip, and I want to tell you the story of my very adventurous life. I was born on June 10th, 1921, on a beautiful, sunny Greek island called Corfu. My official titles were Prince of Greece and Denmark. Even though I was born a prince, my life wasn't always spent in palaces. When I was just a baby, my family had to leave our home in Greece. Because of this, my childhood was spent traveling all across Europe. It was an unusual way to grow up, but it taught me to adapt to new places and situations from a very young age.

My school days were also part of my adventure. I went to a special school in Scotland called Gordonstoun, which was a very important place for me. There, I learned how to be self-reliant, which means I learned to depend on myself and solve my own problems. The school encouraged us to be strong in both mind and body. As I grew up, I dreamed of a life at sea. In 1939, when I was a young man, I made that dream come true by joining the British Royal Navy. My timing was very important, as this was the same year that World War II began. I served on many ships during the war, traveling to different parts of the world. I was very proud to serve my new country during such a difficult time in history.

During my time as a naval cadet, something wonderful happened that changed my life forever. I met a young princess named Elizabeth when she and her family visited the naval college. I was asked to show her around, and we got along very well. For many years after that first meeting, we wrote letters to each other, sharing our thoughts and stories while the war was going on. After the war ended, our friendship had grown into love. We decided to get married, and our wedding took place on November 20th, 1947. It was a very happy day. Just before we were married, I became a British citizen, and the King gave me a new title that I would carry for the rest of my life: the Duke of Edinburgh.

For a few years, Elizabeth and I lived a fairly normal life as a navy family. But everything changed on February 6th, 1952. On that day, Elizabeth's father, the King, passed away. Suddenly, my wife was no longer a princess; she was the Queen. This meant my life had to change, too. My career in the Royal Navy, which I loved, had to come to an end. My new job was to support the Queen in her incredibly important role. My official title became the Queen's consort, which means I was her closest companion and helper. For the rest of my life, I walked alongside her, helping with her duties and serving the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

Even with my new duties, I found ways to follow my own passions and help others. In 1956, I started a program that I am very proud of, called The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. I wanted to give all young people, no matter where they came from, a chance to have adventures and challenge themselves. The award encourages them to learn new skills, help their communities, and go on expeditions to discover just how much they are capable of. I also had a great love for nature. I worked with organizations like the World Wildlife Fund to help protect animals and our planet, speaking up for conservation long before it was a common topic.

I lived a very long and busy life. I was married to the Queen for over 73 years, and we raised a wonderful family together with four children. I lived to be 99 years old. I hope I am remembered for my loyal service to the Queen and our country. I also hope that my work continues through The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, which still encourages millions of young people around the world to believe in themselves and set out on their own great adventures.
