The story

Pytheas the Explorer

Hello! My name is Pytheas. I lived a long, long time ago in a sunny city right by the sea. The city was called Massalia. I loved to watch the big boats sail in and out of the water. At night, I would look up at all the twinkling stars in the sky. I always wondered what was far, far away, across the big, blue water.

One day, I went on a big adventure on a boat. I waved goodbye to my sunny home and sailed out onto the huge, wavy ocean. It was so exciting! I sailed for many, many days and many, many nights. The waves went up and down. Finally, I saw a new place. It was a green land called the Pretannic Isles. Today, you call this place Great Britain. It was very different from my home. It was cool and misty, not sunny like Massalia.

But my trip was not over. I got back on my boat and sailed even farther north. The air got colder and colder. Then, I saw the most amazing thing! When it was nighttime, the sun did not go to sleep. The sun stayed awake in the sky all night long! It was so bright. It was very strange and very wonderful to see the 'midnight sun' shining when it was time to sleep.

After all my adventures, I sailed my big boat all the way back home. I told everyone about the amazing things I saw. I told them about the cool, green land and the land of the midnight sun. My journeys helped people learn more about our big, wonderful world. Even though I lived a very long time ago, people still read my stories to learn about exploring.
