The story

A Story About Shen Kuo

Hello! My name is Shen Kuo. I lived a very long time ago, in a beautiful place called China. Even when I was a little boy, I was full of wonder! I loved to look at the stars, the plants, and the animals. I always asked questions like 'Why?' and 'How?' because I wanted to understand everything about the world around me.

One of my favorite things to do was explore. I would walk high up into the mountains. One day in the 1070s, I found something very surprising up there—seashells! But the ocean was so far away! I realized that the mountains must have been under the water a super, super long time ago. It was like finding a secret story that the earth was telling me.

I also loved to study how things work. I learned about a special needle that was like magic. No matter which way you turned it, it always pointed in the same direction—north! This was the first magnetic compass. I figured out that this pointing needle could help people find their way if they were lost on a long trip. It was a wonderful discovery that helped sailors and explorers for many years.

I wrote down all my discoveries in a book so that other people could learn from them. I lived to be 64 years old, and my ideas helped people understand science and the world a little bit better. People remember me for being curious and for sharing my knowledge with everyone.
