The story

Christopher Wren: The Great Builder of London

Hello! My name is Christopher Wren. When I was a little boy, I loved to learn new things. I liked to look at the stars in the sky. I wondered how things worked. Most of all, I loved to draw and build. I made little models of buildings. I imagined they were big enough to touch the clouds.

When I grew up, I became a scientist, but I never stopped loving buildings. In the year 1666, something sad happened in my city of London. A big fire, called the Great Fire of London, burned down many houses and churches. The king, whose name was King Charles II, gave me a very important job. He asked me to help rebuild London. I wanted to make it beautiful and safe for everyone.

I was so excited to help. I drew pictures of many new churches. My most famous building is a big church called St. Paul's Cathedral. I gave it a huge, round roof called a dome. You could see it from all over the city. It took a long, long time to build. I wanted it to be a special place for everyone in London to enjoy.

I lived a very long and happy life. I got to see London become a wonderful city again. I lived to be 90 years old. Today, if you go to London, you can still see my beautiful buildings. My special church, St. Paul’s Cathedral, is still standing tall for everyone to see.
