Just want Sir Edmund Hillary?
Hello! My name is Edmund Hillary, but my friends called me Ed. I grew up in a country called New Zealand, which has lots of beautiful mountains. Before I became a famous explorer, I had a fun job as a beekeeper! I loved taking care of the bees and collecting their sweet, yummy honey. Buzz, buzz!
I loved to climb. I started with small hills and then climbed bigger and bigger mountains. My biggest dream was to climb the tallest mountain in the whole world, Mount Everest! It’s so high it touches the clouds. I went on this big adventure with my good friend, Tenzing Norgay. We helped each other climb up the slippery ice and deep snow. On May 29th, 1953, we did it! We were the very first people to stand on the top of the world.
The people who live near Mount Everest, called the Sherpa people, were so kind and helped us so much. I wanted to help them, too. So, I spent many years helping build schools for children to learn in and hospitals to help them feel better when they were sick. I lived a long and exciting life and was 88 years old. People remember me for climbing the highest mountain, but I am just as proud of helping my friends in Nepal.
