Hello, my name is Suryavarman II, and I invite you to hear the story of my life as a king of the great Khmer Empire. I lived a very long time ago, in the 12th century, a time of grand temples and powerful rulers in Southeast Asia. When I was a young man, our empire was not as united as it should have been. Different powerful families vied for control, and this division weakened us. I grew up with a deep belief that it was my destiny to bring our people together under one strong ruler—me. I had a claim to the throne through my ancestors, which gave me the right to challenge for leadership, but it was my great-uncle, Dharanindravarman I, who sat on the throne. I knew that to fulfill my destiny and restore the full glory of our empire, I would have to confront him directly. It was a great risk, but one I felt compelled to take for the sake of our kingdom's future.
In the year 1113, the time came for me to act on my convictions. I was young and full of determination to unite the kingdom. I gathered my supporters and initiated my challenge for the throne. It was a difficult and intense struggle, as my great-uncle was a powerful man with his own loyal followers. In a great battle that decided the future of the empire, I faced my great-uncle's forces and was victorious. After the conflict, I was crowned the sole king of a newly unified Khmer Empire. One of my first acts as king was to restore order and stability. I organized my government to be more efficient and performed sacred rituals to honor the gods and bring peace and prosperity to the land. To show the world that the Khmer Empire was strong once more, in 1116, I re-established a strong diplomatic relationship with the powerful empire of China. This alliance opened up pathways for friendship and trade, signaling the beginning of a new era of strength for our people.

While ruling was my duty, my greatest dream was to create something that would last forever and serve as a profound offering to the gods. I was a devoted follower of the Hindu god Vishnu, who is known as the protector and preserver of the universe. I decided I would build a temple for him that would be bigger, more intricate, and more magnificent than anything the world had ever seen. We began construction on this grand project, which you now know as Angkor Wat, early in my reign. The vision was not just for a large building, but for a sacred 'temple-mountain,' a replica on Earth of Mount Meru, the mythical home of the Hindu gods. The scale of this undertaking was immense. Thousands of the most skilled artists, builders, and engineers from across the empire worked for decades to bring my vision to life. We dug a massive moat, wider than three football fields, to surround the temple, representing the mythical ocean that surrounds Mount Meru. We built five tall, central towers shaped like lotus buds to represent the five sacred peaks of the mountain. Perhaps most incredible are the walls of the temple, which are covered in thousands of feet of detailed carvings. These carvings, called bas-reliefs, tell the epic stories of our gods and heroes, and they even depict important battles from my own reign. Angkor Wat was far more than just a temple; it was a physical prayer, a symbol of my devotion to Vishnu, and a powerful statement about the skill, faith, and power of our empire.
While building Angkor Wat was my great passion, I also had a solemn duty to protect and lead my people as a warrior king. A ruler in my time could not only build, but also had to defend. I personally led my armies in several military campaigns against neighboring kingdoms, such as Champa and Đại Việt. These battles were fought for important reasons: to secure our borders from threats and to maintain the strength and influence of the Khmer Empire in the region. Leading an army into battle was incredibly challenging, and I must be honest that not every campaign was a complete success. We faced setbacks and difficulties, as all armies do. However, this was a necessary part of being a king in the 12th century. My efforts in these military matters helped ensure that our empire remained one of the most powerful and respected in all of Southeast Asia during my time on the throne.
My time as king came to an end around the year 1150. After my life concluded, I was given a new name to honor my faith and my life's work: Paramavishnuloka. This special name means 'he who has entered the heavenly world of Vishnu,' a tribute to my deep devotion. Though my military victories and political achievements were important for our empire during my reign, I am remembered most for the incredible temple I left behind. The magnificent structure of Angkor Wat still stands today, a silent witness to centuries of history. It has become the heart and symbol of the nation of Cambodia and is admired by people from all over the world for its beauty and grandeur. My story, our history, and our beliefs are forever carved into its stones, a testament to the vision and ambition of the Khmer people.
