The story

The Milkman of India

Hello. My name is Verghese Kurien, and I was born in the year 1921. Many people called me the Milkman of India. When I was growing up, I saw that not every child had enough yummy milk to drink to make them big and strong. This made me sad, and I knew I wanted to do something to help.

I met many farmers who worked very hard taking care of their cows, but they were not getting much money for the milk. I had a big idea. What if all the farmers worked together as one giant team? In the year 1946, I helped them join together to collect all their milk in one place. By working together, they could make sure they were paid fairly for their hard work. This made the farmers very happy.

Our plan worked better than a dream. Soon, there was so much milk that we could send it to towns and cities all across our country, India. We gave our wonderful milk a special name: Amul. It made me so happy to know that children everywhere could have fresh, healthy milk to drink every single day.

I lived a long and happy life for 90 years. Today, people still remember me for helping bring milk to millions of families. The work I started so long ago continues to help farmers and make sure there is plenty of milk for everyone to enjoy.
