William Shakespeare

Hello there! My name is William Shakespeare, and I'd like to tell you my story. I was born long ago, in 1564, in a lovely English town called Stratford-upon-Avon. I grew up with my brothers and sisters, and our house was always buzzing with activity. I went to school where I fell in love with words and ancient stories. When I wasn't studying, I loved to wander through the fields and forests, watching people and imagining what their lives were like. When I was eighteen, I married a wonderful woman named Anne Hathaway, and soon we had three clever children of our own.

Although I loved my family and my town, a bigger stage was calling to me. I moved to the bustling, noisy city of London to become an actor and a writer. At first, I took any job I could find in the theatre. But all the while, I was scribbling down ideas for my own plays. I joined a group of actors called The Lord Chamberlain's Men. We worked together, and soon we were performing my plays! It was a thrill to see my characters come to life and hear the audience gasp, laugh, or even cry. We became so popular that we built our very own theatre in 1599, a magnificent round building we called The Globe. It was open to the sky, and people from all walks of life, from the poorest folk to Queen Elizabeth I herself, would come to see our shows.

I wrote all sorts of stories. I wrote tragedies, like the story of two young lovers named Romeo and Juliet whose families were enemies. I wrote comedies filled with silly mix-ups and happy endings, like 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' which had mischievous fairies in it! I also wrote plays about real English kings, called histories. I even wrote about a thoughtful prince named Hamlet who talked to ghosts. Words were my paint, and the stage was my canvas. I loved creating characters who felt real and had big feelings, just like you and me. I also wrote many poems, called sonnets, about love and beauty.

After many years in London, I returned to my home in Stratford to be with my family. I had become a successful playwright, and I was ready for a quieter life. I passed away in 1616, but my stories didn't. They were collected by my friends into a big book so they wouldn't be forgotten. It's amazing to me that, hundreds of years later, people all over the world still read my plays and poems. My stories show us what it’s like to be human—to love, to be sad, to laugh, and to dream. And I hope they inspire you to use your own imagination to create wonderful worlds, just as I did.
