Have you ever said your tummy was rumbling like a big, loud drum. Or that your cozy blanket was as soft as a fluffy white cloud. Those are special ways to talk and paint pictures with your words. It’s a little bit of magic. And I am that magic. Hello. I am Figurative Language. I help you say things in a super fun way. It’s so nice to meet you. I love helping your words sparkle and dance.

I am very, very old. So old. A long, long, long time ago, people would sit by warm, crackling campfires. They told stories to each other. To make the stories more exciting, they used me. They would say a hero was "as strong as a bear" to show how powerful he was. Or they would say the moon was "a silver coin in the sky." A very long time ago, in a warm, sunny place called Ancient Greece, a smart thinker named Aristotle noticed me. This was around the 4th century BCE. He saw how I made stories and songs so beautiful. He wrote all about me in a book so that other people could learn how to paint pictures with their words, too.

You use me every single day. When you are so happy and you say, "My heart is beating like a drum," that’s me. When you tell someone, "You are as sweet as sugar," that’s me, too.
