I am Figurative Language, and I make talking and writing a real adventure. When you use me, your words can do amazing things, like make someone giggle or help them understand a feeling that’s hard to describe. I'm as old as the very first stories people told around campfires, long before books were even invented. Thousands of years ago, around the year 2100 BCE in a place called Mesopotamia, storytellers used me in a famous poem called the Epic of Gilgamesh. They used me to make their heroes sound extra brave and their adventures seem incredibly exciting. For a long, long time, people used me without having a special name for me. Then, in Ancient Greece, a super smart thinker named Aristotle, who lived during the 4th century BCE, decided to study me. He thought I was so interesting that he gave my different styles special names. He called one a 'metaphor,' for when you say something is something else, and another a 'simile,' for when you say it's like something else. Much, much later, a famous writer named William Shakespeare, who lived in England in the late 1500s and early 1600s, used me all the time in his plays. He wrote, 'All the world's a stage,' which is one of my favorite outfits to wear.

Today, I'm everywhere you look and listen. I'm in the lyrics of your favorite songs, the pages of your best-loved books, and in the jokes you tell your friends. When you hear someone say, 'It's raining cats and dogs,' you know they don't mean animals are falling from the sky. They are using me to be funny and creative, and to show that it’s raining really hard. You are a word artist, and I am your box of colorful paints.
