A Story from the Forest
Hello. Can you feel the soft moss under your feet and hear the river whisper. I live in the deep, green forests and by the sparkling waters. I know how to build cozy homes from bark and branches, called wigwams, and how to paddle quietly in a canoe made from a birch tree. I listen to the stories of the wind and learn from the animals.
For thousands of years, long before big cities were built, I have been here. My name is the Algonquian Peoples. I am not just one person, but many, many families living all across the land, from where the sun rises over the great salt water to the shores of the giant freshwater lakes. We all speak in a way that is connected, like cousins in a big family. We know the secrets of every season—when to plant corn and squash, when to find sweet maple syrup in the trees, and how to thank the earth for all its gifts.
Today, my voice is still all around you. When you say words like 'moccasin,' 'squash,' or 'toboggan,' you are speaking a little piece of my language. My stories, my songs, and my love for the earth are shared by my people today. I remind everyone to listen to nature, to care for our world, and to remember the families who have always been here.
