You make one loop, then another, and pull them tight. There is a secret plan that helps you know what to do first, next, and last to make something wonderful happen. I am that secret plan. I am the quiet helper that shows you how to build a tall tower of blocks so it doesn't fall over. I'm in your morning routine when you brush your teeth, and I am even in your favorite board games, making sure everyone takes a turn in just the right order so the game is fair. I am the invisible map for getting things done.

So, what is my real name? It’s a little fancy, but you can call me Algorithm. That’s just a big word for a set of instructions or a step-by-step plan. My story began a very, very long time ago, even before there were paper books. Way back around 1800 BCE, in a place called Babylonia, people needed help with math. They wrote down my steps on soft clay tablets to solve problems, almost like doing homework on a piece of mud pie. Many years later, in the 9th century, a brilliant mathematician from Persia named Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi wrote amazing books filled with my step-by-step instructions for solving all sorts of puzzles. He was so famous for using me that people started calling me an 'Algorithm' because it sounds a little bit like his last name, al-Khwarizmi.

For hundreds of years, I mostly lived inside math books, helping people solve tricky number problems. It was my job, and I was very good at it. But then, a very clever woman named Ada Lovelace had a huge idea that changed my life forever. In the year 1843, she was thinking about a new machine and imagined that it could follow my instructions to do much more than just math. She wrote down the very first algorithm intended for a computer, even before real computers like we have today existed. She dreamed that one day, I could help machines create beautiful music or draw amazing pictures. She saw that my simple steps could lead to incredible things.

And guess what? Ada’s dream came true. Today, I am everywhere. I live inside your computers, your family’s phones, and the tablets you play games on. I am the secret helper that finds a funny animal video for you to watch. I'm the one who suggests a new game you might like to play.
