Animal Courtship and Nesting

Have you ever seen a bird puff out its colorful feathers and sing a loud, happy song? Or watched a tiny firefly blink its light in the dark? That’s me. I am the special dance a peacock does with his giant, sparkly tail. I am also the cozy home a robin builds with twigs and soft grass, getting ready for her new family.

I am Animal Courtship and Nesting. It’s my job to help animals find a partner and build a safe home for their babies. For a very long time, people have watched me work. Way back in ancient Greece, around the 4th century BCE, a wise man named Aristotle watched birds and fish. He wrote all about how they built nests and cared for their eggs. Many, many years later, in the 1800s, a scientist named Charles Darwin saw how some animals showed off to find a friend. He realized my dances, songs, and bright colors were all part of helping animals start healthy families.

Today, you can see me everywhere you look. I am in the squirrel who chatters from a branch and the swan who curves his long neck into a heart shape. I help make sure our world is always full of new baby animals. By helping them build safe homes and find loving partners, I fill the world with chirps, wags, and cuddles. I am the beautiful beginning of every animal family.
