When you share your stickers, you use me to make sure it's fair. I am the secret code that unlocks fairness and the quiet magic in a recipe that tells a baker exactly how many cups of sugar to add. I am the plan that helps you save up your allowance, week after week, for that awesome new video game. I appear in all sorts of everyday puzzles, helping you build, share, and plan. My story is as old as people themselves. Long, long ago, even before there were towns or books, people needed me. Imagine sitting around a warm fire about 20,000 years ago. To keep track of the passing days or the number of animals they saw, early humans would carve little scratches onto bones. One famous bone, called the Ishango bone, is covered in my first portraits: simple tally marks. Each mark meant "one." It was a brilliant start. As thousands of years passed, people started building amazing civilizations, and they needed me more than ever. In a place called Mesopotamia, around 4000 BCE, clever people called the Sumerians gave me special symbols. Now, they could easily record how many bags of grain they traded or how many bricks they needed to build their giant temples, called ziggurats. A little later, over in ancient Egypt around 3000 BCE, I had one of my biggest jobs yet. The Egyptians used me to build their incredible pyramids. They needed precise addition and subtraction to make the sides perfectly even, and they even used fractions to measure land and materials. Without me, those magnificent monuments pointing to the sky would have been just a pile of rocks.

For a very long time, I had a little problem. It was a missing piece in my puzzle. Imagine trying to write the number for two hundred and five. You would have the symbol for two and the symbol for five, but what would you put in the middle to show there were no tens? It was so tricky. People would leave a blank space, but that could be very confusing. A number like "2 5" could mean twenty-five or two hundred and five. This was a real headache. Then, something wonderful happened. Around the 5th century CE, brilliant thinkers in India came up with an amazing idea. They invented a brand new symbol for "nothing." It was a simple circle, and they called it "shunya." Today, you know it as zero. Zero was a hero. Suddenly, writing 205 was easy. The zero held the place of the tens, making everything clear. My power grew immensely. Calculations that were once difficult became much simpler. This incredible invention didn't stay in India for long. Around the year 820 CE, a famous Persian scholar named Al-Khwarizmi wrote books about this new way of using numbers. His work helped spread the hero, zero, and the whole new number system across the world, making math easier for everyone.
