Just want Atmospheric Pressure?
Hello. You can’t see me, but I am all around you, giving the whole world a great big hug. Have you ever stuck a suction cup to a window? That’s me, pushing it tight so it sticks. When you drink yummy juice through a straw, I gently push the drink all the way up to your mouth. I am a secret, invisible helper, and my hug is very important. But for a long, long time, people did not know I was here.
Once upon a time, way back in the year 1643, a man in Italy named Evangelista Torricelli was very curious about me. He did a special experiment with a long glass tube and a shiny, silvery liquid. He learned that I am like a big, deep ocean of air, and my weight pushes down on everything. It's a big squeeze. A few years later, in 1648, another smart man named Blaise Pascal asked his friend to take a tube like that up a tall mountain. They saw that my hug got a little bit lighter the higher they climbed. That's how they knew I was real.
Now you know my name. I am Atmospheric Pressure. I am the big hug from the air. Knowing about me is super helpful. I help people who study the weather know if it will be a sunny day for the park or a rainy day for splashing in puddles. I am the reason big airplanes can fly high in the sky, zooming through the clouds. So the next time you sip a drink through a straw, remember me, your invisible friend, the air, always giving the world a gentle, steady hug.
