The story

I Am Binary Code

Imagine flipping a light switch in your room. Click. On. Click. Off. That simple little action is the key to my secret language. Hello there. I am the tiny, super-fast flickers of light and energy inside your phones, tablets, and computers. I am the reason a character can jump in a video game and why your favorite pictures pop up on a screen. You see, I am a special kind of secret language, a code made of just two simple parts. My name is Binary Code, and with my good friend Digital Signals, I help turn everything in the world—your voice, your favorite songs, and even this story—into a simple pattern of 1s and 0s. This pattern is something that all machines can easily understand. It’s how they know what to do, from showing you a video to sending a message to your grandma.

The idea of me is actually very, very old, but people really started to understand my true power a long time ago, even before there were electric lights. Way back in the year 1703, a brilliant man in Germany named Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was thinking about numbers. He had a fantastic 'aha.' moment when he realized that you could write any number, any word, or any idea using just my two simple symbols, 1 and 0. He thought it was an almost magical way to represent all of human logic. He was so excited about it. Then, over one hundred years passed. Around the year 1854, another super smart thinker from England named George Boole had a different but very important idea. He saw that my 'on' and 'off' could also mean 'true' or 'false.' This was a huge step. It meant that machines could be built to make logical decisions, like asking 'Is this statement true.' or 'Is that statement false.'. This helped create the brains for future computers. Finally, clever inventors figured out how to use electricity to bring me to life. A little pulse of electricity could be a '1,' which means 'on,' and no pulse of electricity could be a '0,' which means 'off.' Suddenly, I was zipping and zooming through wires, ready to power the whole world.

Today, I am absolutely everywhere, working my magic behind the scenes. When you send a funny message with an emoji to a friend, watch a colorful cartoon on a tablet, or listen to your favorite song on a device, that’s me working hard. Every single letter you type, every color you see on the screen, and every musical note you hear is turned into a super long, special pattern of my 1s and 0s. I am a language that machines love. I travel as digital signals, little zaps of information that fly through the air and race through cables under the ground and sea. This is how I carry your ideas and stories all across the globe in less than the blink of an eye. Even though I am a simple language made of just two parts, I help you do the most amazing things—learn new facts for school, create beautiful art to share, and talk to people who live far, far away. My simple code of 'on' and 'off' opens up a whole universe of possibilities for you. What incredible things will you imagine with me next?
