The story

The Secret Language of On and Off

Have you ever flipped a light switch. Click. The light is on. Click. The light is off. It’s a simple choice, isn’t it. On or off, yes or no. Well, what if I told you that I am a secret language made of just those two simple ideas. I have a team of only two members, and they are the best partners. My first team member is the number Zero, which means ‘off’. My second team member is the number One, which means ‘on’. Together, my two friends can be arranged in special patterns to say anything in the whole wide world. They can write stories, draw pictures, and even build amazing games. I’m Binary Code, and I’m the special language that helps computers think.

Even though I’m famous for living inside computers today, people knew about my secret power a very, very long time ago. Thousands of years ago in ancient China, people would look at patterns made of whole lines and broken lines. It was a bit like my ones and zeros, and it helped them share big ideas with each other. Much later, a very clever man in Germany named Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz got really excited about me. Around the year 1703, he wrote down all the ways my ones and zeros could be used to solve all kinds of math problems. He showed everyone that you could count and calculate with just two little numbers. Then, on a day in 1854, an English mathematician named George Boole discovered I could do something else amazing. He realized I could be used for logic, which is like answering questions that are either ‘true’ or ‘false’. This was a huge step. Finally, in the 1930s, a man named Claude Shannon figured out how to use my simple ‘on’ and ‘off’ language with electricity. He saw that an electric switch could be ‘on’ for my number one, and ‘off’ for my number zero. This big idea helped people build the very first electronic computers.

Today, I am everywhere, quietly helping you every single day. When you play a fun video game on a console, I am there making the characters jump and run. When you watch your favorite cartoon on a tablet, I am there painting all the bright colors on the screen. When you talk to your family on a phone, I am the one carrying your voice from one place to another. Every picture you see, every song you hear, and every word you read on a device is secretly a long, long pattern of my ones and zeros. The computer can read these patterns super fast. I am proof that just two very simple things, like ‘on’ and ‘off’, can work together to create everything in our amazing digital world.
