My story didn't begin on the polished tables you see today. I was born a very long time ago, around the 6th century CE, in the Gupta Empire in India. Back then, I was known as Chaturanga, which means 'four divisions of the military.' My pieces represented the real Indian army: infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. I was a war game on a board, a way to practice strategy without anyone getting hurt. From India, merchants and travelers carried me along dusty roads to Persia. Around the 7th century, the Persians fell in love with me and changed my name to Shatranj. They also started shouting 'Shāh!'.—their word for 'King'.—when the king was in danger. And when the king couldn't escape?. They'd declare 'Shāh Māt!'. which means 'the king is helpless.' Does that sound familiar?. It’s where your words 'Check' and 'Checkmate' come from. I traveled with scholars and traders through the Arab world and finally reached Europe around the 10th century. Knights and nobles adored me. They saw the battlefield on my board as a reflection of their own world. But I was about to get a major makeover. Around the 15th century in Europe, my rules changed in a big way. The piece next to the king, which had been a quiet advisor, was transformed into the most powerful piece on the board: the Queen. And the little pawns were given a new power.—the ability to dash forward two squares on their very first move. These changes made me faster and more exciting, and I became the game you know and love today.

Today, I am played all over the planet. I live in quiet parks, busy school clubs, and grand tournament halls. I connect people who don't even speak the same language. All they need is my board and a shared love for a good challenge. I teach you to be patient, to look at problems from different angles, and to think about the consequences of your actions. Every game is a new story you create with your opponent. I’ve even challenged the smartest machines.
