Chlorophyll

I peek out from every blade of grass. I paint the leaves on tall, tall trees. When you see a big green field, that's me. I make the world so bright and colorful. What am I. Hello. My name is Chlorophyll. It’s a big word, but my job is simple. I live inside plants and give them their beautiful green color. I am like their special green crayon. But that's not all I do. I also help them make their own yummy food. I am a very busy and helpful friend to all the plants.

How do I help plants make food. It’s like a magic trick. I am a tiny chef hiding in the leaves. When the big, warm sun shines down, I get to work. I take a little bit of sunshine, a sip of water from the rain, and a gulp of air. Mix, mix, mix. I turn it all into a super yummy, sunny day snack for the plant. This helps the plant grow big and strong. For a long, long time, people saw me but didn't know my name. Then, way back on September 2nd, 1817, two smart friends named Joseph Bienaimé Caventou and Pierre-Joseph Pelletier gave me a name. They called me Chlorophyll, which means “green leaf.” I think it’s the perfect name for me.

My sunny day snack doesn't just help the plants. It helps you too. Because I am so good at making food, plants can grow juicy red strawberries and crunchy green beans for you to eat. Yum. And I have another secret gift. While I am busy cooking in the sunshine, I make something special for you to breathe. I make the air all fresh and clean.
