The story

I Am a Colony

Hello there. Do you know what it’s like to be part of a super big, super busy family? Imagine living in one home with hundreds, or even thousands, of your brothers and sisters. We all share our food, we build our cozy house together, and we always, always help each other out. Some of us find the yummy snacks, and others help build our home stronger. We are a team. I am a special kind of family that sticks together. I am a Colony.

You can find me all around you if you look closely. Watch the busy ants marching in a long line, carrying little crumbs back to their secret nest—that’s me. Listen for the happy buzz-buzz-buzz near a bright flower. That’s probably a beehive nearby, where my bee friends make sweet honey together. That’s me, too. Far away, where it’s snowy and cold, penguins huddle in a big group to stay warm. That’s me. A very long time ago, brave explorers sailed on big ships to new lands. When they built a new town together, they were making me.

Being me is so important because we are always stronger together. One little ant can’t carry a big, juicy strawberry, but a whole team of ants can. One bee can't build a whole hive, but together they can build a giant, sweet-smelling home. Whenever you and your friends build a tall block tower, clean up your toys, or sing a song together, you are working like me. Being a colony is about helping, sharing, and being a great team, and that helps everyone grow happy and strong.
