Have you ever held a brand new penny, so shiny and bright it looks like a little piece of the sunset. Before I was a coin in your hand, I was sleeping deep inside the earth, a soft, reddish-brown rock waiting for an adventure. People who found me discovered a wonderful secret. I am strong, but I am also a little bit gentle. You can tap me and hammer me into all sorts of amazing shapes, and I won't even break. One minute I could be a beautiful bracelet, and the next, a sharp tool for carving wood. I bet you've guessed who I am by now. Hello there. I am Copper.

I am a very, very old friend to people. In fact, I was one of the very first metals they ever learned to use. A long, long time ago, way back around 9000 BCE, people living in a place called the Middle East found pieces of me just sitting on the ground. They picked me up and realized how easy I was to bend and shape. But then, they learned an even bigger secret around the 5th millennium BCE. They found out if they took special blue-green rocks and made them super hot, I would melt out like gooey, glowing honey. This was a huge discovery. Suddenly, they could make so many things. They made strong axes for cutting wood, sturdy pots for cooking food, and shiny ornaments to wear. They used me so much that we call this time in history the Copper Age. But I had another surprise. Around 3300 BCE, some clever people tried mixing me with another metal called tin. Poof. Together, we became a new metal that was much, much stronger. They called it bronze, and it helped them build amazing cities and tools.

My adventures didn't stop in the past. Today, I'm busier than ever, but I'm a bit of a secret agent. I am hiding inside the walls of your home, stretched into long, thin wires. I carry a special kind of energy called electricity all the way to your lights so you can read at night, to your television for movie time, and to your tablet for playing games. I also help bring fresh, clean water to your sink through pipes, so you can brush your teeth and get a drink. Have you ever seen the gigantic, green Statue of Liberty in New York. Well, that's me. I used to be my usual reddish-brown color, but after standing outside in the wind, rain, and sun for many years, I turned that beautiful green color to protect myself. From the very first ancient tools to the electricity that zips through your house, I've been helping people create and connect for thousands of years.
