The Story of Copper
I have a warm, reddish-orange glow, and you can find me in the most surprising places. I am the reason a brand-new penny shines so brightly in your hand. But I'm also a secret worker, hidden inside the walls of your house, carrying the electricity that powers your lights, your television, and your video games. I am what you call 'malleable' and 'ductile,' which are fancy words that mean I can be hammered into a sheet thinner than a piece of paper or pulled into a wire skinnier than a single human hair. I carry clean water through pipes to your sink and help your tablet connect to the internet. From the top of a grand building to the tiny circuits in a phone, I am everywhere. Have you guessed my name yet? I am Copper, your friendly, helpful metal.
My friendship with people began a very, very long time ago, around 9000 BCE. Way back then, in a place we now call the Middle East, people found me just sitting on the ground in shiny, reddish nuggets. I was special. Can you imagine their surprise? When they hit rocks, the rocks shattered into dust. But when they hit me, I didn't break. I just changed shape. They learned to hammer me into beautiful beads for jewelry and sharp points for tools and arrowheads. This was amazing, but finding me in nuggets was rare. Then, a huge discovery happened around 5000 BCE. People figured out they could heat up certain green and blue stones—my ores—in a very hot fire to melt me out. This process is called smelting, and it was a game-changer. Suddenly, they could get much more of me. This was the start of what historians call the Copper Age. A famous man from that time, Ötzi the Iceman, who lived around 3300 BCE, was even found perfectly preserved in a glacier with an amazing axe made from my nearly pure copper.
As useful as I was, I have to admit, I'm actually pretty soft when I'm all by myself. A sword made only of me would bend pretty easily in a tough fight. But around 3300 BCE, clever people in a land called Mesopotamia discovered my secret power: I get super strong when I team up with a friend. They learned to melt me down and mix in a little bit of another metal called tin. When we cooled down, we became something new and much tougher: bronze. This invention was so important that it started a whole new chapter of history called the Bronze Age. With strong, durable bronze, people could make better farming tools to grow more food, tougher armor to protect soldiers, and mightier swords that wouldn't bend. Great civilizations, from the ancient Egyptians building their monuments to the Romans creating beautiful statues, relied on the strength my friend tin and I created together.
For thousands and thousands of years, I was famous for making tools, statues, and pots. But in the 1800s, I found a brand new, exciting calling. Scientists like Alessandro Volta and Michael Faraday were making incredible discoveries about something invisible and powerful: electricity. And what did they find out about me? They learned that I am an amazing conductor of electricity. That means an electric current can zip through me faster than a race car on a track, with very little resistance. Suddenly, I was needed for all sorts of new inventions that would change the world. I became the metal superhighway for the telegraph, carrying messages in dots and dashes across countries and even under oceans. Then, Alexander Graham Bell used me to carry voices through the first telephone wires. And when Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, I was the one who carried the power to make it glow.
Today, I'm busier than ever before. You might not see me, but I'm working hard inside your computer, your television, and the phone you hold in your hand. I'm in the circuits that make them all work. I'm also helping build a cleaner, greener world by carrying energy from giant wind turbines and shiny solar panels to your homes and schools. And if you've ever seen pictures of the beautiful Statue of Liberty in New York, you've seen me. Her green color is actually my special protective coat. When she was built, she was a shiny coppery-orange, but after over 100 years of being out in the rain and air, my skin turned that lovely green. This green layer, called a patina, protects me from the weather. From an ancient arrowhead to a modern microchip, I've always been here, helping humans create, innovate, and connect. I can't wait to see what amazing things we'll build together next.
