Travel with me back in time, over forty thousand years ago. In a cave in what is now Eswatini, Africa, someone picked up the leg bone of a baboon. Day by day, perhaps as they watched the moon wax and wane, they carved a notch. When they were done, this Lebombo bone held 29 distinct marks, a silent record of passing time, perhaps one of the first calendars. I was a secret whispered onto bone. Thousands of years later, around 20,000 years ago, I showed up again on the Ishango bone, found near a river in the Congo. This wasn't just a simple line of scratches. The marks were arranged in clever groups. Some historians believe these groupings show a deep understanding of prime numbers or even a form of multiplication. People weren't just using me to keep a tally; they were starting to see the relationships between my numbers, the patterns I could make. I was more than just a list. I was becoming a language, a tool for thinking, etched into wood and bone to remember the size of a herd, the members of a tribe, or the passing of the seasons.

As humans built cities and empires, I grew up right alongside them. I needed to become more organized, more powerful. Around 4000 BCE in Mesopotamia, the clever Sumerians gave me a physical form. It meant 'nothing,' yet it was the most powerful of all, acting as a placeholder. Now, the number 1 could mean one, ten, one hundred, or one thousand, all depending on where it stood. This 'base-10' system was so logical and efficient that it spread throughout the world, carried by Arab scholars and merchants along trade routes. An Italian mathematician named Leonardo of Pisa, whom you know as Fibonacci, saw my potential and helped introduce me to Europe in his book on the 1st of January, 1202. Suddenly, calculating trade, designing cathedrals, and charting the stars became dramatically easier. I was ready for the modern world.
