A long, long, long time ago, even before there were houses or cars, people needed me. They didn't have names for numbers like 'one' or 'two' at first. So, they used their fingers. That's why counting to ten is so special. As far back as 43,000 BCE, people would scratch little lines on sticks or bones to remember things, like how many animals they saw. Each mark meant 'one'. It was the very beginning of counting, and it all started with a simple idea: this one thing goes with this one mark.

Today, I am everywhere. I'm in the countdown for hide-and-seek: '...8, 9, 10. Ready or not, here I come.'. I help you build towers with blocks, making sure they don't fall.
