The story

A Story About Dance

Do you ever feel a wiggle in your toes when a happy song plays. Do your fingers start to tap, tap, tap. Maybe you want to spin around in a circle, round and round until you get dizzy and laugh. That happy, jumpy, bouncy feeling is me. I make you want to move your body and play. When you hop like a bunny or sway like a tall tree, you are playing with me. I love it when you move. Hello. I am Dance.

I am very, very old. I have been around for a long, long time, even before there were books or schools. A long time ago, about 9,000 years ago, people painted pictures of me on cave walls in a place called India. The pictures showed people moving together, holding hands, and having fun. In ancient Egypt, thousands of years ago, people would move with me to tell stories about the sun and the stars. They would move to say thank you for the yummy food they grew. I helped them share big feelings and happy thoughts without saying a single word. I helped them celebrate together.

Today, you can find me everywhere. I am at birthday parties when you play musical statues. I am on bright stages with sparkly lights. I am even in your living room when you put on your favorite music and just wiggle. I am a secret language that everyone knows. You don't need words to use me. You just need your happy feet and a happy heart. Whenever you feel excited or full of joy, let your body move. Go ahead, dance with me.
