The Wiggle in Your Toes
Have you ever heard a song so good that your toes started tapping all by themselves? Maybe your shoulders started to wiggle and your feet wanted to bounce. It’s a happy, bubbly feeling that makes you want to spin and jump and tell a story without using any words at all. That feeling is me. Hello. I am Dance, and I’ve been with people since the very beginning, helping them share their biggest feelings, from joy to excitement. When you feel the music in your heart and let your body move, you are letting me come to life. I am the story your feet tell when they can’t stay still, the smile you make when you leap in the air, and the fun you have when you move to the beat. I am a language everyone in the world can understand.
My journey is as old as people themselves. Long, long ago, around 7000 BCE, some of the first people painted pictures of me on the walls of caves in a place called Bhimbetka in India. You could see figures holding hands and moving together. That’s how we know I was there. A little later, in ancient Egypt around 3300 BCE, I was very important. People would dance for their gods in special ceremonies to tell stories or ask for a good harvest. Then, in ancient Greece around the 8th century BCE, they thought I was a gift from the gods and made me a part of their famous plays and big celebrations. As time twirled on, I visited fancy castles in Europe during the 14th century, where kings and queens learned special steps for their grand parties. One king, Louis the 14th of France, loved me so much that in 1661, he started the very first school just for me, a ballet academy, so everyone could learn my graceful moves. I didn't stop there. I kept changing, and in the 1970s, I popped up on the streets as hip-hop, with brand new ways to spin, jump, and slide.
And now, here I am, with you. I am not just for ancient caves or royal courts. I am for everyone, everywhere. You can find me in grand theaters where dancers tell stories in beautiful ballets, but you can also find me right in your living room when you have a dance party with your family. People use me to celebrate birthdays and weddings, to stay healthy and strong, and just to feel happy when they are having a tough day. I help friends connect and share a fun time without saying a word. So the next time you hear a beat that makes you want to move, listen to it. Let your feet tap and your body sway. Don’t worry about getting the steps right. Just let me help you tell your very own story. What story will your dance tell today?
