The story

The Tree from Down Under

Can you smell that. It is a fresh, clean, and minty scent that fills the air all around me. If you touch my trunk, you might feel my bark peeling off in long, thin strips, like paper. I love to feel the warm sun on my long, skinny leaves as they dance in the breeze. Up in my branches, sleepy, fuzzy animals with big noses love to munch on my leaves all day long. They are my best friends. I am a very tall tree, and I grow in a special land far across the ocean, a place people call the land down under. For my little koala friends, I am more than just a home, I am also their favorite breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They cuddle into my branches and snooze the day away, safe and sound high above the ground.

Hello there. I am the Eucalyptus tree. My family of trees has lived here in Australia for millions of years, long before there were any people at all. For thousands of years, the first people of Australia, the Indigenous peoples, knew all my secrets. They were very clever and used my strong wood to make tools like boomerangs and shields. They would gather my leaves to make special medicines that could help with coughs and stuffy noses. I was happy to help them stay strong and healthy. Then, one day in the year 1770, big ships sailed across the sea and explorers from far away landed on the shore. They had never seen a tree like me before. They were amazed by my height and my unique smell. A man who studied plants, called a botanist, took a special interest in me. His name was Jacques Labillardière, and in the year 1792, he gave me my official scientific name. After that, my fame grew. People took my tiny seeds and planted them all over the world, because I can grow very tall, very fast.

Even today, I am a tree full of gifts for the world. My strong wood is still used to build cozy houses for families and to make the paper in your favorite books. The special, fresh-smelling oil from my leaves is used in drops and rubs that help you breathe better when you have a cold. You might even have some in your medicine cabinet at home. And of course, I am still the most important thing in the world to my koala friends back in Australia. I am their home and their only food. I love stretching my branches toward the sun, cleaning the air with every leaf, and sharing my clean scent with everyone who walks by. I am a reminder of the wild, sunny land I come from, and I will always be here, growing tall and sharing my gifts.
