The story

The Story of Fire

Hello there. Do you know who I am? I flicker and dance in bright orange, yellow, and red colors. I crackle and pop like a tiny, happy song. When you come close, you can feel my hug of warmth on a chilly night. I can be as small as a candle flame or as big as a cozy bonfire. I am Fire.

A very, very long time ago, before there were houses or cars, people met me for the first time. They might have seen me when lightning zapped a tree. Whoosh. At first, they were a little scared of my big bright light. But soon, they saw how I could help. Early people learned to keep me in a special safe spot. I kept their families warm when the wind was cold. I scared away big, hungry animals in the dark night. Go away, animals. I also helped cook their food, making it yummy and soft to eat. Mmm, tasty. After a long time, people learned how to make me by rubbing sticks together very fast. Rub, rub, rub, poof. I became their special friend, the heart of their home.

Today, I still love to help you. I glow in fireplaces to keep your house cozy. I dance at campfires while you toast yummy, gooey marshmallows. I am the little light on your birthday candles when you make a super special wish. Phew. I am very, very strong, so you must always have a grown-up with me to stay safe. I love bringing everyone together to tell stories and sing songs, making the world a little brighter and warmer for you.
