Folk Dances Around the World

Can you hear it. The sound of dozens of feet hitting the earth in perfect time, like a giant heartbeat. Can you see it. Colorful ribbons flying through the air as people twirl and leap, their faces bright with smiles. I am the story a village tells at a wedding, the prayer a farmer makes for a good harvest, and the history a grandparent shares with a child, all without using a single word. I live in the joyful clap of your hands and the proud bend of your knees. I am the rhythm that connects everyone in a community, making them feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves. When people share me, they share a piece of who they are and where they come from. Hello. You can call me Folk Dance.

My heartbeat is ancient. I don't have just one birthday because I was born in thousands of places at once, long, long before anyone started writing down history. Can you imagine people from the Stone Age, thousands of years ago, dancing around a crackling fire to celebrate a successful hunt or to tell the story of a brave hero. That was me, even back then. As people built the first villages and learned to farm the land, I grew up right alongside them. In ancient Greece, people danced in beautiful formations to honor their gods and goddesses at big festivals. Far away in Japan, a tradition called Bon Odori started over 500 years ago. During the Obon festival, people gather to dance together and welcome the spirits of their ancestors back home for a visit. My steps became a special way for people to remember where they came from and to pass down their most important traditions from one generation to the next.

I look different all over the world because I am a reflection of the people who dance me. In Ireland, where my steps have been practiced for many centuries, I became the famous Irish Stepdance. Dancers hold their arms very still at their sides while their feet move in lightning-fast, clicking patterns that are amazing to watch. This style was organized and became very popular in the late 19th century. Far away in Mexico, after the country won its independence in the early 19th century, the people wanted a dance that showed their national pride. So they combined different local dances to create the Jarabe Tapatío, which you might know as the Mexican Hat Dance. It tells a fun, playful story of a man trying to win a woman's affection. And in the Punjab region of India and Pakistan, I am the joyful and powerful Bhangra. For centuries, farmers performed my energetic moves, with high kicks and big arm movements, to celebrate the spring harvest season. Each version of me tells a unique story about the land, the work, and the celebrations of its people.

Even in a world full of computers, smartphones, and video games, I am more alive than ever. All around the world, people still gather for festivals to perform my steps, wearing colorful traditional clothing and sharing their culture with others. Children learn my dances in special classes to connect with their family's heritage and to feel like they are part of a big, wonderful story that stretches back in time. I am a bridge to the past and a celebration in the present. I remind people that they belong to a community and share a history that is worth celebrating with every stomp, clap, and twirl. I am proof that you don’t always need words to share your most important feelings. Sometimes, all you need is a good rhythm and the courage to dance.
