The Big Idea That Helps Everyone

Have you ever played a game with your friends. Games have rules, right. You have rules about whose turn it is to go first. When you share yummy snacks, you make sure everyone gets a piece so it is fair. I am like the big rules for a whole town. I am a big, helpful idea that lets everyone agree on how to live and play together. I help make sure everyone is safe and happy. I help people know how to be fair to each other. I am like a team captain for the whole neighborhood, making sure we all get along.

Hello. I am Government. That’s a big word, but I am just a big idea to help people. A long, long, long time ago, people started living together in big towns. This was thousands of years ago, way back around 4000 BCE. These first big towns were in a warm, sunny place called Mesopotamia. So many people lived together that they needed a plan to work together. They needed rules for sharing water to make their gardens grow yummy food for everyone. They needed help to make sure everyone stayed safe and that people were kind to each other. So, they created me. I was their special plan. I helped them make fair rules so everyone could live together peacefully and happily in their town.

You can see me working all around you every single day. When you are in a car and the traffic light turns bright red, that’s me helping all the cars stop so everyone can cross the street safely. When a brave firefighter comes to help, that is me too. Do you like to go to the park and play on the swings. I help make sure the park is clean and open for you and all your friends. I am here to help our communities be safe and fair. I love helping make our world a happy place for everyone to live and play together.
