The story

The House of Stories

Shhh. Can you hear that quiet, soft sound? It is the whisper of pages turning. Look up, up, up. My shelves are like tall trees in a forest full of stories. Every book has a special world inside, with bright pictures and amazing adventures waiting for you. Do you know who I am? I am a Library. I am a cozy house for books. My oldest, oldest relatives were not made of paper like my books today. They were special clay tablets, kept safe in a place called Mesopotamia a very, very long time ago, way back in the 7th century BCE. I have been holding stories for a long, long time.

Once upon a time, only kings and queens had big piles of books all to themselves. It was hard for other people to read a story. But then, some very kind people had a wonderful idea. They said, “Let’s share our books so everyone can have a turn to read.”. A nice man named Benjamin Franklin helped start a sharing library in America way back in 1731. He wanted all his friends to be able to learn new things. Then, in the 1800s, an even better idea came along. People decided to make libraries free for everyone. Now, you can get a special card with your name on it. You can walk right up to my shelves, pick any book you love, and a friendly librarian will help you check it out to take home. Sharing stories is the best adventure.

Today, I have so much more than just books. I have computers with fun learning games and cozy corners for story time where you can listen to tales about brave knights and silly puppies. I am a happy place for the whole neighborhood to come together, learn, and make new friends. You might build with colorful blocks or draw a pretty picture here. Every time you visit me, a new adventure is waiting for you on my shelves. Just open a book, and you can zoom to the moon in a rocket ship or roar with a giant dinosaur. Your next big adventure starts right here.
