The Little Drum Inside You

Listen closely. Can you hear me? Thump-thump, thump-thump. I am a little drum hidden inside your chest, and I beat all day and all night. When you run and jump, I beat fast like a bunny hopping! When you are sleeping, I beat slowly and softly, like a gentle pat on your back. I am your very own music machine. I am your heart.

For a very long time, people knew I was important, but they didn't know my secret job. Thousands of years ago, around 1550 BCE, the ancient Egyptians thought I was the home of all your feelings and ideas! They thought you felt love and sadness right inside of me. Much, much later, a very curious doctor named William Harvey watched me work. In 1628, he discovered my real secret: I am a pump! A super-strong, amazing pump that pushes your blood all around your body to give you energy.

My job is the best job in the world. I send warm blood to your tippy-toes so you can wiggle them and to your busy brain so you can think of wonderful stories. Every thump-thump is me saying, 'You've got this!' I help you live, play, learn, and give the biggest, warmest hugs. I am your forever friend, beating just for you, keeping you strong and full of life.
