The Great Human Journey
Have you ever looked at a big green hill and wondered what was on the other side. Or stood by the ocean and imagined what amazing lands were across the water. Sometimes, your family might pack up all your toys and clothes into boxes to move to a new house, maybe in a new town. That feeling of adventure, of starting somewhere new, is me. I am the great human journey. I am Human Migration.
My story started a very, very long time ago, before there were any cities or even farms. About 70,000 years ago, the first modern people, called Homo sapiens, lived in a warm, beautiful land called Africa. They were super curious and brave. They would look at the horizon and think, 'I wonder what’s out there.' Sometimes the weather would get too dry, or the big herds of animals they hunted for food would wander away. So, the people packed their tools and followed them. It was a very slow adventure, not like a fast trip in a car. For thousands and thousands of years, families walked, step by step, out of Africa. They discovered new lands in places we now call Asia and Europe, finding new caves to call home and new rivers to drink from.
People were so clever and found amazing ways to travel to faraway places. During a time called the Ice Age, the world got very chilly. So much water froze into giant sheets of ice that the oceans became lower. This uncovered a secret path of land that connected Asia and North America. Scientists call it the Bering Land Bridge. Around 15,000 years ago, people walked across this special bridge, discovering a whole new part of the world without ever getting their feet wet in the ocean. But what about crossing the big, wide sea. Well, long before that, around 45,000 years ago, some of the bravest adventurers built the first boats. They paddled across the sea, island by island, until they reached the giant island we now call Australia. They were true explorers.
Guess what. I am still happening every single day. Maybe you have a friend who moved to your town from another country, or maybe your family moved to a new city for a new job. People travel to go to a new school, to be with their families, or just to have a new adventure. Because of me, the world is a giant, wonderful neighborhood. You get to try yummy foods like tacos or spaghetti, listen to music with different rhythms, and learn words in new languages. I help everyone share their stories and ideas, and I show us that no matter where we come from, we are all part of one big human family, living together on our amazing planet.
