I Am Limestone!
Way, way down under the big, sparkly blue sea, I was sleepy for a very long time. I wasn't born in a cozy bed. I was made from tiny, shiny shells and the little skeletons of sea animals. Millions and millions of them. The big sea pushed and squished them all together, like a slow, gentle hug. Squeeze. Squeeze. Squeeze. If you look very close, you can still see the little shapes of shells hidden inside me. They are my happy secret. I am a strong, bright rock. I am Limestone.
One day, people found me sleeping under the warm sun. They saw how strong I was. Long, long ago, in a place called Egypt, people called the Ancient Egyptians used me to build something huge. Around the year 2560 BCE, they cut me into big blocks to make the Great Pyramid of Giza. It was a giant, pointy building that touched the sky. Later, in a place called Ancient Rome, people found a new trick. Around the 3rd century BCE, they heated me up until I was super hot. Poof. I turned into a soft powder. They mixed this powder with sand and water to make something sticky called cement. They used my cement to build strong roads to walk on and big buildings for everyone to see. I was helping everyone build their amazing cities.
Guess what? That special powder I make is still used today. It helps build your big school and your cozy house. But that's not all. I have other little jobs too. Sometimes, a tiny bit of me is in your toothpaste to help make your teeth clean and shiny. I also help farmers in their big green fields, making the soil happy so yummy food can grow tall and strong. From the bottom of the ancient sea to your home today, I am always here, a helpful rock, building our wonderful world and keeping you safe.
