The story

We Are the People of the Nile

Greetings from the land of North Africa. We are the people of ancient Egypt, and our story is tied to the mighty river that flows through our home: the Nile. For thousands of years, our lives followed the rhythm of this river. Every year, it would gently flood its banks, and when the waters pulled back, they left behind a wonderful gift. This gift was a layer of rich, dark, fertile soil that was perfect for farming. We had a special name for our home because of this soil. We called it Kemet, which means “the black land.” This black land was the foundation of our world. In its soil, we grew bountiful crops of wheat to make our bread and flax to weave into cool linen clothing. Because the Nile was so predictable and generous, we always had enough to eat. This security allowed our communities to grow from small villages into a great and powerful civilization that would last for a very long time.

Our society was organized under the leadership of our powerful rulers, whom we called pharaohs. We believed that the pharaohs were not just kings or queens; we saw them as gods living on Earth, chosen to keep balance and order in the universe. Rulers like the great builder Khufu and the powerful Queen Hatshepsut commanded our government and led our strong armies. To manage a kingdom that stretched for hundreds of miles along the Nile, we needed an organized way to keep track of everything. This important work was done by scribes. Scribes were highly respected people who spent years learning our unique system of writing, which you know as hieroglyphs. These were not letters like A, B, and C. Instead, our writing used hundreds of beautiful pictures that could represent whole ideas or individual sounds. Scribes wrote on a remarkable invention of ours called papyrus, a paper-like material we made by pressing together strips of river reeds. On these scrolls, they recorded our laws, wrote down our history, and carefully tracked how much grain was harvested and kept in our storehouses.

Our spiritual beliefs were a very important part of our daily lives, and we thought a great deal about what happens after we die. We believed that a person’s spirit continued to live on in another world, so we made careful preparations for this long journey into the afterlife. To make sure the spirit would have a home to return to, we developed a way to preserve bodies through a process called mummification. For our pharaohs, we built incredible tombs to protect them forever. The most famous of these are the great pyramids at Giza, giant mountains of stone that reached for the sky. These tombs were not empty places. We filled them with everything a person might need or want in the next world. There were precious treasures, furniture, clothing, and plenty of food. We also included magical charms and spells to protect the person on their journey to the afterlife, where they would meet powerful gods like Ra, the sun god, and Osiris, the ruler of the underworld.

Our civilization flourished for over 3,000 years, and the things we accomplished continue to fascinate people today. Our legacy is written in stone across the landscape of modern Egypt. The great pyramids and towering temples we built still stand, showing the amazing skills we developed in engineering and mathematics. To plan our farming season around the Nile’s flood, we created a calendar with 365 days, very similar to the one used today. Our doctors also had an advanced knowledge of medicine for their time. Although our ancient kingdom eventually came to an end, our story was never truly lost. It is remembered in the hieroglyphs we left behind and in the amazing structures that have survived for thousands of years. Today, the modern country of Egypt stands where our kingdom once did, and its people are proud of the incredible and enduring heritage we left for the world.
