Hello! We are the people of ancient Egypt, and we lived thousands of years ago on the continent of Africa. Our home was a special place, built right along the edges of the great Nile River. This river was the center of our world. It gave us fresh water to drink and was full of fish that we could catch for our meals. We also built boats to travel up and down the river, visiting other towns and trading goods.
More than anything, the river helped us grow our food. Every single year, something amazing would happen. The Nile River would flood its banks, covering the nearby land with water. When the water slowly went away, it left behind a wonderful gift: a layer of rich, dark mud. This soil was perfect for farming. In it, we grew wheat, barley, and other plants that kept our families fed and healthy. Because of the river, our home was a green and lively place.
Our communities were led by powerful rulers, kings and queens that we called pharaohs. We believed that our pharaohs were chosen by the gods to lead us and keep our land safe and prosperous. To honor them, we built some of the largest stone buildings the world has ever seen. We created enormous pyramids to serve as special tombs for our pharaohs when they passed on to the afterlife. We believed that a person’s spirit lived on after death, so we filled these tombs with beautiful art, furniture, and golden treasures that we thought our leaders would need on their next journey.
Besides building great things, we also had a special way to write down our history and our stories. Our writing did not use letters like yours does. Instead, we used hundreds of beautiful little pictures called hieroglyphs. Each tiny picture could stand for a sound, a whole word, or even an idea. Not everyone knew how to write this way. People who learned this skill were called scribes. These special writers would carefully paint or carve our hieroglyphs onto the walls of our temples or inside the pyramids. They also wrote on a type of paper we made from a plant called papyrus, which grew along the Nile.

Our civilization ended a very long time ago, and our way of life changed. But we did not vanish. You can still see the amazing things we left behind for the world to discover. Today, people from all over the world travel to Egypt to visit our giant temples and stand beside the incredible pyramids that still reach toward the sky. The stories we wrote down in hieroglyphs help everyone learn about our beliefs, our leaders, and our lives along the river so long ago.
