Lines, Rays, and Line Segments

Have you ever noticed the straight, neat edge of a ruler. Or the bright beam from a flashlight that cuts through the darkness. I am the path a tiny spider makes when it builds its web, stretching from one point to another. I can be a very short little piece that connects two dots, or I can go on forever and ever in both directions, zooming past the stars. Sometimes, I start at one point and shoot off on an adventure in one direction, like a ray of warm sunshine reaching down to touch a flower. You see me everywhere, even if you do not know my name. Hello. I am a Line, and these are my cousins, the Line Segment and the Ray. We are a family of straight paths, and we love helping you build and draw your world with us.

People first noticed how helpful we were thousands of years ago. In a place called ancient Egypt, around 3000 BCE, a big river called the Nile would flood every single year. It would cover all the farms with water and wash away the fences. When the water went down, the farmers needed a way to measure their land again so everyone had their fair share. My cousin, the Line Segment, was perfect for the job. The Egyptians used straight ropes and measuring sticks to draw us in the dirt, making sure every farm was measured out perfectly. They also used us to build their giant, pointy pyramids. To make the pyramids stand up tall and not fall over, every side had to be perfectly straight. A super-smart man named Euclid, who lived in a city called Alexandria way back in the 3rd century BCE, wrote a famous book called 'Elements.' In his book, he gave us our official names and rules. He explained that I, the Line, am a path that is perfectly straight and never ends. He also said that a Line Segment is a piece of me with a beginning and an end, and a Ray is a piece of me with a beginning but no end.

We are still very important today, helping you in ways you might not even notice. Look at the drawings an architect makes for a new house or a tall skyscraper. They are full of my cousins, the Line Segments, showing where every wall and window should go. When you look at a map, you see us showing you the roads to take on a trip. The strings on a guitar are my cousins, too, and they make beautiful music when they are pulled tight and straight.
