The Story of the Sky
Do you ever feel a cool breeze tickle your cheeks or watch fluffy clouds float by. Do you hear the pitter-patter of rain on the roof or feel the warm sun on your nose. That’s me at play. I can be gentle and quiet, or loud and splashy. I paint the sky with rainbows after a storm and help you fly your kite on a windy day. Hello. My name is Meteorology, and I am the story of the sky.
A long, long time ago, people looked up and wondered all about me. They saw the sun rise every morning and watched for rain clouds to help their gardens grow. Around 340 BCE, a very curious person in ancient Greece named Aristotle decided to study me very closely. He watched my clouds, felt my winds, and thought about where rain came from. He even wrote a book and gave me my name, Meteorology. He was like a weather detective, trying to figure out all my secrets. He loved learning how I worked.
Today, special weather detectives called meteorologists study me all the time. They use amazing tools like thermometers to know if it’s a hot day for shorts or a chilly day for a sweater. They use satellites that zoom around the Earth to see where my storms are hiding. Because they understand me, they can tell you if you’ll need an umbrella for your walk or sunglasses for the playground. I love helping you get ready for a day full of fun, no matter what the weather brings.
