The Story of Online Safety
Imagine a magical window that lets you visit almost anywhere. You can watch cartoons from Japan, play games with a friend across the country, or see pictures of penguins in Antarctica. It's a huge, exciting, and wonderful place full of fun things to discover. But just like when you cross a real street, you need to know how to look both ways. That's where I come in. I’m like a friendly guide or a set of secret rules that helps you have the best, safest time on your adventures. Hello. I am Online Safety.
A long time ago, the internet wasn't for everyone. It started back in 1969 with something called ARPANET, which was mainly for scientists to share information. But then, in 1991, the World Wide Web was created, and suddenly, the magical window was open for families everywhere. As more and more kids like you started exploring in the 1990s, grown-ups realized this new playground needed some safety rules. They started thinking about me. They taught kids that just like in the real world, you shouldn't share your secrets, like your passwords, which are like keys to your online house. By 1998, people in the United States even created a very important rule called the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA. It was designed to make sure websites and apps were extra careful with information from kids. This was a big step in helping me grow strong and clear for everyone.
Today, the internet is bigger than ever. New games, fun apps, and ways to chat with friends pop up all the time, especially after the 2000s when social media became popular. Because the online world is always changing, I am always learning and growing, too. I’m here to remind you of a few simple, powerful things: always be kind to others online, keep your personal information private like a treasure, and if anything ever makes you feel weird or uncomfortable, tell a grown-up you trust right away. They are your team. Think of me as your superpower. I help you make smart choices so you can explore, create, learn, and connect with all the amazing things the online world has to offer, happily and safely.
