The story

The Incredible Journey of the Potato

I start my life tucked away in the cool, dark earth. I’m not a seed, but a special kind of thick stem called a tuber, and I grow from a little spot on another potato called an ‘eye.’ It’s quiet and cozy down here, and I spend my time gathering up all the sunshine and water my plant’s leaves collect from above. I store it as yummy, starchy energy, getting plump and round. Sometimes I’m smooth and yellow, other times I’m bumpy and brown, or even bright purple! I have lots of brothers and sisters growing all around me, and we look like a secret stash of buried treasure. For thousands of years, people didn’t know me everywhere, but in my first home, high in the mountains, I was a superstar. Ready to hear my story? I am the Potato!

My story begins a very, very long time ago, somewhere between 8,000 BCE and 5,000 BCE, high up in the Andes Mountains of South America. The people living there were the first to realize how special I was. They carefully planted me in the rocky soil and discovered I could grow where other crops couldn't. The Inca civilization, which rose thousands of years later, treated me like gold. They found clever ways to make me last through cold winters by freeze-drying me into a light, fluffy food called chuño. For centuries, I was a well-kept secret of the Americas. Then, everything changed. Around the year 1570, Spanish explorers sailing far from their homes in Europe arrived in South America. They were amazed by the Inca treasures, and they took me back with them across the vast ocean. But in Europe, people were suspicious. They had never seen anything like me. They thought my lumpy shape was weird, and some even believed I was poisonous! For almost 200 years, many people just grew me for my pretty purple and white flowers, not for the nutritious treasure hidden underground.

My big break in Europe came thanks to a clever Frenchman named Antoine-Augustin Parmentier. In the 1770s, he knew I could help fight hunger. To prove I was safe and delicious, he threw fancy dinner parties where every single dish was made from me! He even convinced the king and queen of France, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, to wear my blossoms as fashion accessories. Suddenly, I was famous! From France, I traveled all over the world. I became especially important in Ireland, where I could grow easily and feed many families. But this led to a very sad time. From 1845 to 1852, a terrible disease called potato blight destroyed my family there. This event, known as the Great Famine, was a hard lesson for everyone about how important it is to grow many different kinds of food. Despite that tragedy, I continued my journey. I became a favorite food in almost every country, changing to fit every kitchen. In America, I was sliced thin and fried into crispy french fries. In India, I was diced into spicy curries. I showed the world how adaptable and dependable I could be.

Look at me now! I’m probably in your kitchen, waiting to become a fluffy baked potato, creamy mashed potatoes, or crispy potato chips. I’ve gone from a humble mountain vegetable to one of the most important foods on the entire planet. But my greatest adventure was yet to come. On October 20th, 1995, I blasted off into space! I was grown aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, becoming the very first food to be cultivated in zero gravity. How amazing is that? From the earth to the stars, I’ve had quite a journey. I’m proof that sometimes the most wonderful things can come from the most humble beginnings, hidden just beneath the surface. I’m a simple, lumpy tuber who fed ancient civilizations, traveled the globe, and even became an astronaut. I am here to give you energy for your own adventures, reminding you to stay curious and always be ready to grow.
