A Story About the Presidency

Have you ever been the line leader at school. Or maybe you were the team captain in a game. It feels good to help everyone work together and know where to go. It is a very special job. I am like that, but I am a very big, important job for a whole country full of people. I help make sure everyone is on the same team. I am the Presidency of the United States.

My first day was a long, long time ago. After a big war called the American Revolution, lots of people decided they needed one person to be their leader. So, some very wise people got together and wrote down all the rules for my job. They wrote them in a special book of rules called the Constitution in 1787. Then, on a sunny day, April 30th, 1789, a kind and brave man named George Washington became the very first person to have my job. He was so gentle and strong. He showed everyone how to be a good and fair leader for the whole new country. He was the very first president.

Since that very first day with George Washington, many different people have had my job. The person who has my job is called the President. The President gets to live in a big, beautiful white house in a city called Washington, D.C. My job is to help the President make sure everyone is safe and happy. The President helps make sure the rules are fair for all the people. I help the whole country work together like one big, happy team. It is a huge job, but it is all about helping people, and that is the best job in the world.
