Rainbow

Have you ever spotted a tiny red ladybug crawling on a green leaf. Or peeled a bright yellow banana for a snack. Have you ever looked up at the big, beautiful blue sky. I am in all of those places, showing off my wonderful shades. But my favorite way to say hello is after a gentle rainstorm, when the sun peeks out from behind the clouds. I stretch across the whole sky in a giant, colorful arch, a bridge of pure light for everyone to see. People stop and point and smile whenever I appear. I am all the Colors, and when we all hold hands, we become the Rainbow.

For thousands of years, people looked up at me with wonder but could not figure out my secret. They loved seeing me but didn't know how I worked. A very long time ago, around 350 BCE in a place called ancient Greece, a thinker named Aristotle had an idea. He thought I was made by mixing light and darkness together, but that wasn't quite right. My real secret stayed hidden inside sunbeams for a very, very long time after that. Then, a brilliant scientist named Sir Isaac Newton came along. Around the year 1666, he became very curious about me. In a dark room, he took a special piece of glass shaped like a triangle, called a prism. He let a tiny beam of sunlight shine right through it. And then, wow. Out I came. Splashed across his wall were all of my colors, standing side by side: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Sir Isaac Newton had discovered the truth. I wasn't just in the sky after the rain, I was hiding inside every single ray of sunlight.

Once Newton shared my secret, it changed everything. Artists finally understood how to create every color they could ever imagine. They learned that by mixing my primary colors—red, yellow, and blue—they could paint purple grapes, orange sunsets, and green fields in their masterpieces. I also help people share their feelings. Have you ever heard someone say they were 'feeling blue' when they were sad, or 'tickled pink' when they were happy. That’s me. My colors are even used for important jobs, like on flags that represent whole countries, or in traffic lights that tell drivers when it is safe to stop and go. Everywhere you look, I am there to make life more exciting and beautiful. So, the next time you see a rainbow, remember that you're seeing the secret beauty that's hidden in every single sunbeam.
